Aalto University is a multi-disciplinary educational organization where science and art meet technology and business. Established in 2010 following the merger of Helsinki’s University of Technology, School of Economics and University of Art and Design, it comprises six schools each with several departments, laboratories, and research units. Named after Alvar Aalto, the famous Finnish architect and designer, approximately 5,000 staff and 20,000 students work and study across its three campuses.
“The renewed environment offers four times more capacity and five-fold performance. With the system we provide a service that is of vital importance.” —Mr. Mikko Hakala, doctor of technology, Aalto University
To deliver a highly scalable storage solution to enhance the performance of Aalto’s supercomputer which is used for data-intensive research, such as physics, computer science, neuroscience, economics, and signal processing.
The storage system was renewed with DDN’s EXAScaler® storage solution (SFA12KX® and Lustre* file system), which were integrated with Hewlett Packard Enterprise ProLiant DL360 Gen9 servers. The system was built and tested at the HPE factory and included very powerful and versatile technical features for storage.
- Deliver 4x more capacity and 5x more performance than Aalto’s prior solution
- Advanced big data storage platform delivers the data handling functionality, capacity, and accelerated access times Aalto’s research teams require
- Offers mature Lustre-based technology, integrating fully with the HPE servers
- Boasts fully optimized Storage Fusion Architecture® (SFA), satisfying the needs of a data-intensive environment
