“For the last couple of years, DDN GRIDScaler has helped solve our high performance storage demands. The addition of DDN’s GS-WOS Bridge Gateway now allows us to extend the value of our original DDN investment by enabling an object storage tier with DDN WOS object storage. WOS integrates seamlessly into our high performance storage environment, by federating data sets from across the multiple data centers in our research community, and helping us to meet our retention and data protection requirements.”

Shailesh M. Shenoy
Director of Engineering and Operations for Einstein’s Integrated Imaging Program

Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University (Einstein) is a premier, research-intensive medical school dedicated to medical education, research and innovative biomedical investigation and has over 300 research laboratories. In 2014, the National Institutes of Health awarded Einstein $157 million in funding.

At the Integrated Imaging Program at Einstein, research goals drive technology development. The program develops novel microscopy techniques to answer fundamental biological questions; distributes microscopy technologies, methods and reagents to the research community. It also educates and trains postdoctoral fellows and graduate students.

  • Current system failing to scale to meet ~1TB a week data growth needs
  • Decentralized, department-based research that requires significant administrative overhead
  • IT support with limited staff
  • Mixed environment of storage systems and LDAPs for authentication and user identification
  • Lack of high-availability systems

DDN’s End-To-End Data Management Solution Enables

  • Asynchronous copy of data to another location
  • Single namespace and identity management for CIFS, NFS and GPFS mounts
  • Snapshots (with self service recovery of files and directories)
  • Ability to migrate files to secondary tiers and remote locations for DR purposes
  • Rule-based data lifecycle management (From HDD to nearline)
  • Reduced system complexity by consolidating disparate storage systems

Customer Results

  • GRIDScaler™ Parallel File System Appliance delivers high performance and seamless scalability for high data rate-capture and future data growth
  • Based on administrator-defined data lifecycle management policies, the GS-WOS Bridge Gateway automatically migrates data into a WOS® Object Storage tier, enabling a research Cloud for archive and research collaboration across two data centers
  • WOS automatically protects Cloud-based data, creating multiple protected copies through replication and erasure coding and delivering the industry’s highest levels of cloud data protection
  • Einstein built a single ‘federated’ architecture of WOS object storage and high-speed GRIDScaler featuring DDN’s edition of IBM® GPFS™
  • WOS automated policies minimize management intervention and reduce TCO
  • Automated monitoring of hardware and reporting of component failures to DDN Support using DirectMon® Management
