Public Transport Authority of Western Australia (PTA)

“Our guiding principle for PTA’s flexible yet powerful CCTV and storage system is the ability to deliver enhanced capacity with redundancy for the future. With DDN, we’ve chosen a storage solution that can be scaled to current and future business needs.”

Steve Furmedge
Director of Security Services for the Public Transport Authority

The Public Transport Authority (PTA) is the government agency that oversees Western Australia’s public transit infrastructure. Chartered with serving more than two million people in the Perth metropolitan area as well as more than 240 towns across the State, the PTA connects people and places safely and securely. As part of PTA’s security focus, the organization initiated an innovative effort that called for the installation of an extensive, closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance and monitoring system. Additionally, the project required upgrading PTA’s communications network and storage foundation to accommodate the need to send, receive, store and archive massive amounts of data from the large number of video cameras.

Read their success story to learn how high-performance DDN® storage has helped the Western Australia PTA:

  • Leverage an integrated video surveillance system that has contributed to significant decrease in complaints against transit officers as well as a 97% rate of successful prosecution of offenders
  • Store footage from more than 1,800 cameras for 31 days at a minimum of 24 frames-per-second, while making it accessible from any networked computer

CHALLENGES

  • Initial decentralized system architecture created scalability, throughput and manageability challenges
  • Retrieving footage was time consuming and made more difficult by occasional server failures
  • Escalating demand to accommodate data explosion and transit center

SOLUTION

A fully integrated video surveillance system powered by DDN SFA12K® storage systems with 3PB of capacity

BUSINESS BENEFITS

  • The surveillance system has contributed to a successful prosecution rate of 97% for offenders
  • Complaints against transit officers have dropped 70% over five years, attributable in part to the ability to quickly investigate incidents
  • The ability to identify and apprehend graffiti vandals has decreased graffiti cleanup costs by 70% per year
  • The PTA is poised for growth and expansion as new technologies and applications mature

TECHNICAL BENEFITS

  • DDN’s centralized storage delivers high throughput at 6GB/s and more than 10PB of storage capacity, far more than currently required to support the system
  • Footage from all 1,800 cameras can be stored for 31 days at a minimum of 24 frame-per-second frame rate, greatly increasing image quality
  • Industry-leading storage capacity and reliability enable accommodating hundreds of additional cameras and locations as well as advanced facial recognition and new security applications
  • Power and scalable capacity provides room for future scaling and adding capabilities like facial and license plate recognition
